Why the UK?
With universities at the top of the world rankings, an English-speaking work environment and opportunities in finance, technology and healthcare, the UK is one of the most popular destinations for people from Turkey. Since it has left the EU, Schengen rules do not apply; its visa and immigration system is entirely separate.
Cities and cost of living
London is one of the most expensive cities in Europe; rent and transport make up a large part of the budget. Cities such as Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool and Glasgow offer more affordable living with both university and job options. To give an idea of the official figures: for the UK student visa, a higher monthly living cost must be shown for London than for the rest of the country.
- Health: NHS services are accessed through the Immigration Health Surcharge paid with the visa application.
- Time difference: 3 hours behind Turkey in winter, 2 hours in summer.
Routes to work
The main route is the Skilled Worker visa, obtained with a job offer from a licensed sponsor employer; the salary threshold and list of occupations are updated regularly. The business route under the Ankara Agreement has been closed to new applications. Those who study in the UK can apply for the Graduate Route, which allows them to work for a period after graduation; as its duration is subject to change, check the current situation. Details: UK work visa, other visa types.
Education
A bachelor's degree usually takes 3 years and a master's mostly 1 year; foundation programmes serve as a bridge for those who cannot gain direct admission after high school. A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the university is required for the student visa. Schools and programmes: Studying in the UK.
Visas and family
For tourist and family visits, see the UK tourist visa; to join your family, the family visa; for all types: UK visa application.
