Vijf landen vergeleken op huur, dagelijks leven, collegegeld en officiële kosten; posten waar u op moet letten bij het plannen van uw budget.

The answer to the question “Where should I study or work?” usually starts with the budget. The comparison below positions countries relative to one another in terms of rent, transport, food and official costs. Since exact amounts vary greatly by city, period and lifestyle, we have given relative levels rather than figures; if you are looking for an official reference, the living cost amounts required in visa applications give a good idea of the minimum.

Items that determine your budget

  • Rent and deposit: In the first month, a deposit of usually 1–3 months' rent is paid together with the first month's rent; this is the largest start-up cost.
  • Health insurance: In some countries it is deducted from salary while students pay separately; in the UK it is paid upfront with the visa application.
  • Transport: Student and annual passes offer significant savings.
  • Official costs: Visa, residence card, translation and apostille fees; for details, see our apostille and translation guide.

How to decide?

Looking only at rent can be misleading: in Germany and Austria, the low fees at public universities offset the burden of high rents; in Poland, both rent and daily living costs are low, but programmes charge fees; in the UK, although the total cost is high, shorter programmes reduce the overall duration. Post-graduation work opportunities and language advantages should also be taken into account.
